When out walking the other week I saw this sheep with her lambs waiting for us to pass before they made a bolt for the field in front of them . I arranged them into an overlapping group to accentuate the anticipation and tried to keep the colour range tight. I painted it in a single sitting as it seemed to come together fairly easily and am pretty pleased with the outcome.

We were moving up and down the country recently and travelling down the east side we stopped off at St Ives near Cambridge where we lived many years ago. We took a walk along the River Ouse and I saw a number of scenes which individually had some charm and interest but I felt could be combined to give an archetypical image of England on a summer’s day.
At first I couldn’t work out how to combine the different aspects I wanted to include and then I realised I could do it with a long thin format turned on it’s side, giving a long depth of field. It was almost as if I’d cut a slice of the countryside and served it up as a painting.

Another painting from the Brede Valley. It was a couple of days before the first painting I did on 6th Jan. We were going to dinner with some friends and were a bit early, so we stopped at Brede Church as the sun was about to go down behind the hills. As I got to get a decent view I scared the sheep.
Our hosts told us of a good walk from this point so a few days later, on another sunny day, we set off down waterworks lane from where I did the other painting.
