This was the Chinese new year’s day in Fort Canning Park. Like the previous sketch it shows people picnicking, this time on a public holiday and a Chinese lady having her picture taken on the lawn in front of the old fort. I liked the regency buildings against the backdrop of the tropical trees. On the distant walls are the grave stones of the early settlers who mostly seemed to be dying in their twenties and thirties. These were put there when the old Christian graveyard was cleared. The mix of cultures in Singapore is intriguing. Everyone seems to get along fine, though you wonder that all is well because the economy is going well. Next door in Malaysia, things aren’t as rosey. Only time will tell. LUNCHTIME IN SINGAPORE- WATERCOLOUR SKETCH
I have decided to post a set of watercolour sketches done in situ. This first one was in a park at lunchtime in Singapore. The three building workers had a picnic lunch in the shade. Their uniforms echoed the flowers in the background. The heavy traffic continued to roar by all the while, but they were oblivious, falling to sleep after eating.
