LIVERPOOL CORNER – WATERCOLOUR PAINTING

The tower of the Anglican Cathedral glowers over large parts of the city. Here on the edges of Toxteth it thoroughly dominates the surrounding buildings even though it is set back within its wooded grounds. It is most striking when a sandstone face glows in the sunlight whilst its shadow-side displays a thunderous purple- maybe some ecclesiastical message there for us, the great unwashed. Anyway, because of the dominance of the tower, I pushed the other architecture back. I also placed a taxi, blocking the pavement, at an angle to break the verticals. Perhaps it could do with a few figures?

DECISIONS, DECISIONS – ACRYLIC PAINTING

Last week we were showing some friends around Liverpool and stopped for refreshment. I couldnt resist this study in light and shade at one of the city’s cafes.

NIGHT MARKET – PASTEL SKETCH

Another of the street food series. I liked the oranges against the blues. I couldnt quite decipher what the stall was selling but the poses of the stall holder and customers was interesting. I’m still exploring the subject at the moment and even deciding what medium to use, though with pastel I seem to be getting a dynamic effect.

DALE STREET IN THE WET – WATERCOLOUR PAINTING

Returning to the station from a life painting session I was struck by the reflections  on the pavement and took a few photos. The street has some interesting buildings, but the light never seems to be in the right position to bring out their beauty. So I guess this as near as I get to something I find satisfying.

I also had another go at the pastel I posted a week or ago, entitled ‘Crossing the Strand’ – another snapshot of Liverpool. I agreed with a reader’s criticism that the figures seemed to form a queue across the picture, so have bunched them up a bit and spread the rest out. I did it on a lighter paper which meant I had to fight to get the feel of the early evening gloom.

THE MORNING AFTER ON MATHEW STREET – WATERCOLOUR PAINTING

I was walking down Mathew Street in Liverpool the day after St Patrick’s day. A feeling of  quiet reflection in the air. I liked the breaks of light and dark down the street where the Cavern Club, a place  the Beatles used to play, was ( there still is a Cavern Club on the site of the old one)
